NEW THE BLACK KEYS SONG

Today, The Black Keys released a new single off their upcoming album El Camino (due in stores Dec. 6th).  Lonely Boy moves with that expected rock we have become accustomed to.  Not to mention the video is rather funny.  Watch and enjoy the greatness that is The Black Keys.

ZAPPA - DECLINE OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

I wont bore everyone with the obvious details of how Frank Zappa is a genius or how he was always ahead of his time.  Just watch the video.  Then watch even more of Frank on YouTube.  I actually think I like the clips of Frank more than his actual music.  I know, I know I am not supposed to say stuff like that.  Just watch please.

COVERING ACHTUNG BABY

Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, The Killers, Jack White and more have put together a tribute to the ridiculously good album Achtung Baby.  The album is easily one of my personal favorites.  The type of album that every track is good, not because it would be a pop hit, but just because of the craftsmanship involved and the way the songs move effortlessly from one song to the next.  Check out NIN's version of Zoo Station here at Consequence of Sound, along with the aforementioned artists.  Enjoy.

SONG OF THE DAY

Fearless by Pink Floyd

I figured I would just stick with the Pink Floyd theme (see previous posting).  I am forever grateful to the radio personality (yes, I think that sounds better than disc jockey or dj - but thats another topic for another posting) who played this song on my lunch hour at work.  I was the typical poser Floyd fan, still am to the most part really.  But when I heard this song, I knew it was Pink Floyd.  That distinct guitar, that distinct vocal of David Gilmour.  It was as though somehow I had rediscovered Pink Floyd.  This song just takes me to away to a spot.  A spot where I am always by myself with my thoughts, thinking inward if you will.  I love that a song can do that.

WELL DONE JIMMY

Last week on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon the show dedicated all the shows from the week to Pink Floyd.  Very cool concept, and the performances were excellent as well.  Different bands covered songs throughout the week.  The performances were:

Breathe by The Shins

In The Flesh with Roger Waters & Foo Fighters

Luscifer Sam by MGMT

Wish You Were Here by Dierks Bentley

Mother by Pearl Jam

Again, really good performances of a legendary band.  One of my favorite sites has links to each performance from the shows.  Check it out here.  Antiquiet - Pink Floyd Week

SONG OF THE DAY

Grown So Ugly - The Black Keys

Great song.  My intro to The Black Keys.  I just remember thinking "WOW" what great song.  I first heard this song via a purchase of a british music magazine.  When I bought the magazine it had a CD attached to it.  I thought to myself, "oh great a bunch of bands I dont know".  I thought it would be throw away type of stuff.  Most of it was really.  Except this gem.  Mind you it is a cover tune (see Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band), but The Black Keys leave no doubt about the strength and soul they put behind it, making it their own.

ALBUM REVIEW

THE SEA OF MEMORIES - BUSH

Bush is back at it after quite the layoff, in fact a 10 year layoff. Missing from the band is Nigel Pulsford (guitar) & Dave Parsons (bass). New faces Chris Traynor and Corey Britz fill the void for them.

Its my uneducated guess that most people will want to compare this album to their popular debut Sixteen Stone. Unfair? Perhaps. This is usually how things work, people do not really embrace change, myself included.

I think that Bush is definitely looking to evolve here. (Which I give them a lot of credit for doing so.) To be something more than what they used to be. But what?

The album's sound seems to be stuck in the ten year gap it's left between albums. Not quite old Bush and not quite the refined band that some expect in the later years of a career.

I listened to THE SEA OF MEMORIES while at my desk at work. I realized halfway through it. That I stopped "hearing" it. It just faded into the background. Not a terrible album by any means, but nothing that makes you stop and listen.

I don't have a rating system (hell, I'm not anywhere close to being a music critic). What I recommend is that you listen for yourself to decide.

NOW PLAYING

THE DISTANCE - CAKE

GOODS

SONG OF THE DAY

Substitute - The Who

Specifically off the The BBC Sessions album.  Not quite sure, but for some reason I like this instance of the song better than its original.  Perhaps its because of its unpolished sound.  Or that its recording was done at such an early point of the band's existence.  Moments like that are particularly special.  Capturing a band at a very raw, somewhat newborn stage.

Classic line from a iconic band - "Substitute, my coke for gin"

Check it out.  A must have for all PJ fans

PINKY SWEAR

This time around AXL swears he wont pull any of his normal antics, fits, or just flat out leave the stage and cause some sort of mass riot.

Yes the always enigmatic Axl Rose and company are going to tour your United States.

It brings up the thought, if one (mainly myself) wants another(Axl Rose) to just go away.  Should one actually post any information on the individual?????

If interested Antiquiet broke this story on their site here

ALBUM PREVIEW

THE HUNTER - MASTODON

By no means am I one to review albums.  I can simply suggest what I like and what I don't like.

The official release of this album is next Tuesday, the 27th.  But what I hear is really good.  I got into this band somewhat late.  I only recently "found" them with their last album "Crack the Skye" (by the way, also very good).

Definitely a heavy band.  A ridiculously talented band.  Just great musicians.  This album attempts to, AND succeeds in kicking some serious ass.  Just one man's opinion.

Form your own opinion here:

SONG OF THE DAY

"Would?" - Alice in Chains

This song first appeared on the Singles - Soundtrack.  Hence why I posted the picture above.  Its how I remember the song. The song also appears on the album Dirt, which most know.  This particular song was my aural entry into the "grunge" sound.  Eventually I would become entrenched in the genre.  Absorbing all things grunge.  Buying Soundgarden t-shirts, Pearl Jam posters, albums, anything grunge.

Back to the song.  I love the begining of the song.  Not my absolute favorite Alice in Chains song, but its up there.  In any case enjoy.

SONG OF THE DAY

"Don't Bring Me Down" - Electric Light Orchestra  a.k.a. ELO

Have always liked this band for its personal nostalgia.  It reminds me of when I was a kid growing up and my folks absolutely crankin' this band or which ever album they had at the time.  Actually I think it was probably a 45 that they were playing on a turntable - which I still own to this day.  To bad the relic doesnt work any more.

But I digress and get back to the music.  It always bring me right back to that same living room of the apartment where we first lived as a family.  Even at an early age the song seemed very different to me.  It seemed different than other music I had heard on the radio or in my parents living room.  Perhaps it was just the sweeping sounds it seemed to create.  That ever typical tone of Jeff Lynne singing "Dont bring me down....Groosshh" (actual lyrics might be different, but thats what I hear).

All in all.  A great song in my opinion.  I am glad it was the first selection my iPod made.

Song of the Day - Disclamer

Before I go ahead and name the Song of the Day I feel as though I need to put out a preemptive posting.  The concept is easy.  Song - a musical tune.  Day - current day of the week and year.

Each day I will allow my iPod to randomly select a song.  That song will be posted.

Now here is the thing.  Music is subjective and always subject to criticism.  Which is quite welcome.  However I cant be held responsible for some the bad music that will come out of my iPod.

I mean at one time everybody thought Tubthumping was an awesome tune.  Ummmm, right???  Uh, yeah.  Ok, ok.  So maybe I can and should be held responsible for these songs.  Who cares?? right?

The basic principle is no matter what my opinion of a song is today/currently it will be posted.  In any case most should evoke some sort of thought, or feeling, or memory of past times.  Isn't that was music all about?  (well maybe not all)

AND THE HITS JUST KEEP ON COMIN'

In a follow up to my other post this morning about odd pairings in music.  Yes its been done again.  Antiquiet.com reported that Lou Reed and Metallica are releasing a new album in October, specifically Halloween.  Hope there is no truth to the rumor of Barry Manilow and Slipknot teaming up for a double album.  Check out Antiquiet's story here (antiquiet).

Like Peas in a Pod

........or not. Some pairings in life are better left alone. Like Gary Cherone & Van Halen, or Fred Durst covering The Who's - Behind Blue Eyes.

Well add one more to the list of bad pairings in life. Somehow Insane Clown Posse, yes that Insane Clown Posse have teamed up with the former White Stripes frontman Jack White.

I have no more words for this, really dont......a link to the story is here.

Worth the read.

One of my favorite bands, Pearl Jam.  Found this article relatively interesting.  As the article says its nice to hear from a band that is notorious for turning away interviews.  Although as of the past few years they have embraced more of a presence within their industry.   Here is the link to the article - Pearl Jam Turns 20

Best use of the bagpipe ever?

I am thinking yes.  Just heard this tune this morning and it got me thinking.

There are other songs, I am sure but I am going with "It's A Long Way To The Top" (If You Wanna Rock n' Roll).

Enjoy  -  It's A Long Way To The Top

P.S.  Great clip of the band.  However they must have lost money at this show - check the lack of crowd around the 4:50 mark.

.....In The Beginning

No, no, no.....its not the opening from Motley Crue's "Shout at the Devil"
Yes indeed.....my first post, my first blog.  Here goes nothing right?  For those that veiw, ENJOY!
